Introduction

The UK Parliament design system contains guidance, examples and code to support Parliament teams in building services and websites.

Who the design system is for

The design system is for Product clusters working in the Parliamentary Digital Service.

Agencies working for UK Parliament

If you’re an agency working for UK Parliament and want to use the design system, please talk to your contract manager.

Why you should use the design system

The design system contains the designs and code for many of the common elements needed to create webpages. Use these elements to speed up delivery whilst also making it easier to roll out improvements across parliament.uk.

This will help us build a consistent experience across parliament.uk. It will also make it easier for users to engage with our content and use our services.

What is in the design system

The design system contains:

  • foundations
  • components
  • form elements
  • global elements
  • how to guides

Foundations

As their name suggests, our foundations underpin everything that we do. They bring consistency to all our output and make it easy to roll out global changes.

You must always use the foundations when building your service or website.

Components

Components are reusable building blocks for designing and delivering webpages.

Form elements

Form elements allow users to input data.

Global elements

Global elements are components which bring consistency to essential website features. For example, navigation.

You must use these components on all webpages.

How to guides

Best practice guidance for interaction and content designers.

Who’s responsible for the design system

The Improving User Experience cluster manages the design system.
